Soul Food stands with the women of Ekurhuleni and South Africa against gender-based violence and femicide.
Our hearts are heavy.
The recent deaths of women in Ekurhuleni confront us again with a painful reality that has affected far too many families and communities across our country.
Behind the number nine are nine human beings. Nine lives. Daughters, sisters, mothers, friends and members of communities. Women whose lives, hopes and futures mattered.
Enough is enough.
At Soul Food, we spend every day working within communities. Many of the people at the heart of our work are women — ECD principals, teachers, food handlers, caregivers, mothers, colleagues and community leaders.
We see women nurturing children, preparing meals, leading centres and holding families and communities together. They are helping raise the very generation whose future we are working to protect.
That is why we cannot speak about nourishing children and building brighter futures while remaining silent when women are living in fear and losing their lives.
Mothers and caregivers play an extraordinary role in nurturing the next generation. But a woman’s worth is not defined by whether she is a mother, wife, sister or caregiver.
Every woman has the right to live. To be safe. To be respected. To dream. To grow older.
Our Commitment
As Soul Provider Trust (Soul Food), we stand with the families mourning loved ones, with survivors of gender-based violence, and with women in Ekurhuleni and across South Africa.
Our work may begin with fighting hunger and child malnutrition, but the brighter future we speak about must also be a future where the children we nourish today — girls and boys alike — grow up understanding dignity, respect, equality and the value of human life.
It must be a future where our daughters do not have to grow up afraid.
And where our sons understand that respecting and protecting the dignity of women is not optional — it is part of the kind of society we must build together.
To our sisters, mothers, daughters, colleagues and friends: your lives matter.
To the men in our communities: this responsibility belongs to us too.
And to every community we serve: silence cannot become normal.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
STOP GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE. STOP FEMICIDE.
LET OUR WOMEN LIVE.
